“Sigil’s the Crossroads, the great, shudderin’ home to all the planewalkers of the Great Ring”
Sigil, often called the City of Doors, The Crossroads, The Cage. A planar metropolis sitting at the very centre of The Outlands, high above the central spire. Shaped like a torus, the city itself is on the inside of the ring, and thus there is no sky. There is light, one which waxes and wanes to create day and night, but the city runs on a constant basis and what time of day it is is of no concern.
It is impossible to enter or exit the City of Doors without using portals, strewn all around Sigil giving it its nicknames. The entire city is overseen by a being known as The Lady of Pain, a woman who rarely if ever shows her presence, but one who rules with such power than even the residents of Sigil fear to insult her, lest they be flayed alive. However, she is not reckless, and is unbelievably intelligent, to the point at which many of the residents have what her greater plan is. Some planar scholars believe that Sigil is her prison, perhaps bolstered by the fact that religion, while not unheard of in Sigil, is practised quietly and behind closed doors.
Sigil is a melting pot of all races, and as such the architecture in Sigil is confusing and boggling, with different cultures living side by side to varying levels of happiness. As confusing as a place Sigil is, there are distinct wards that the Lady has set up.
- The Lady’s Ward: Rich and exclusive, this houses the elites of Sigil society.
- The Market and Guildhall Wards: Home to traders, artisans, and members of Sigils hundreds of guilds.
- The Clerk’s Ward: Home to lower-rung bureaucrats and middlemen.
- The Lower Ward: Industrial and full of smoke.
- The Hive: A wretched hive of scum and villainy.
